FARNBOROUGH 2008: Pratt & Whitney flies PW1000G

Pratt & Whitney flew its PurePower PW1000G (formerly known as the geared turbofan) demonstrator engine for the first time on 11 July.

The manufacturer plans to accumulate around 40 flight hours using its Boeing 747SP testbed, before the powerplant is shipped to Airbus in Toulouse for a further 75h of trials aboard an A340-600.

The engine has been selected to power the Bombardier CSeries and Mitsubishi Regional Jet.
