BREAKING NEWS: Spanair aircraft said to overrun runway in Madrid

Rescuers at Madrid Barajas Airport are attending the scene of an apparent runway overrun involving a Spanair aircraft.

The aircraft is said to have been departing for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands. Spanair operates Boeing MD-80s and Airbus A320s on the route.

While injuries among passengers are being reported, no immediate figures are available for the number of occupants on board.
