Few survivors expected from Spanair crash

Latest casualty estimates from Madrid are putting the death toll from today's Boeing MD-82 accident at more than 100.

The toll was earlier put at around 45 but latest indications point to a much higher number.

Some reports, citing emergency services personnel, even suggest only a couple of dozen occupants survived the crash.

Flight JK5022 crashed while departing Madrid Barajas Airport for Las Palmas in the Canary Islands.

Information about the accident is still sketchy but Spanair says 173 people were on board, nine of them crew members.

It has yet to confirm which specific airframe was involved.
