Weston Airport (EIWT) played host to a rather unusual visitor last week. On Tuesday June 15, Auster G-AKWS (msn 1237) arrived from Shobdon Airfield in Herefordshire. Built in 1944 the aircraft differs from the majority of Austers in that it is fitted with a Lycoming O-320 160HP engine with a Sensenich M74DM metal propeller.
Painted in a two tone camo scheme the aircraft carries its former military serial RT610 and is believed to be the first visit to Ireland of an Auster in a camo scheme. Back in the late 1960’s Peasrse Cahill’s Auster J/1 Autocrat carried a false RAF scheme for its role in a film which was made here. Thanks to Joe McDermott for the background and picture of G-AKWS’ visit to Weston.

The Deutsche Rettungsflugwacht or DRF Luftrettung is Germany’s air ambulance and emergency rescue service. With its mission control centre in Karlsruhe / Baden Baden the organisation controls a fleet of 4 aircraft and more than 50 helicopters. The helicopter fleet consists of EC135, EC145, BK117 and Bell 412 whilst the fixed wing fleet consists of Beech 200 and that air ambulance favourite the Learjet 35A which still retains its popularity due to the wide cabin door. The DRF’s Learjet registered D-CAVE (msn 35-423) visited Dublin on Thursday last and was pictured during refuelling by Joe McDermott. Built in 1981 the aircraft was acquired by the DRF as long ago as 1988 and remained with the organistion since.
Unfortunately it is necessary to go further afield to catch a glimpse of the organisation’s rotary winged craft as the picture of BK117 registered D-HAWK (msn 7225) taken in Stuttgart demonstrates.

On Wednesday last, June 10, Ryanair again called for the sale by airport operator BAA of Stansted Airport and either Edinburgh or Glasgow Airport after the BAA announced that traffic numbers had declined by 8%, 10% and 14% respectively at these airports since the start of 2010.
Commenting on the figures, Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said “These declining passenger numbers provide further evidence of the urgent need to break up the BAA airport monopoly, as recommended by the UK Competition Authorities. Forcing these airports into separate ownership will lead to a more competitive environment, lower passenger charges, improved passenger services and the roll out of additional and much needed capacity at more competitive prices.”
