Amelia Earhart and Fred Noonan. Did they attempt to return to Rabaul, PNG?

The Amelia Earhart mystery continues. An ex. Air Nuigini engineer believes that Amelia and Fred tried to make it back to Rabaul in East New Britain, Papua New Guinea.
