I believe the name Panthera (meaning Panther), which is the generic name of all roaring cats, is an apt one for the M-346
Yours sincerely
John Minassian
John ..... there was already a Panther .....
the Grummano F9F .....
which fought during the Korean War .....
Having slept on it:
On a stability theme - on the basis that the aircraft is a sound platform to learn from:Aermacchi StalwartAermacchi Resolut (I dropped off the "e" for more effect)Sadly these seem to be taken:Aermacchi MinervaAermacchi Ascent
oops - I realise I shouldn't be posting the answers here - now I have given too many good ideas away!!! :)
" now I have given too many good ideas away!!! :)"
You are right .....
As a nod to EADS' moribund MAKO with a little twist to the company name, and a not very PC acknowledgement of those who would be flying the trainer, I suggest Aermacchi MACHO -- emphasizing their love for mach and gungho spirit.
Penguin is the best name, I think.
The plane looks like a penguin
Best Regards Rolf Jonsson
Rolle ..... Penguin already exists .....
Stingray ..... MACHO ..... very interesting .....
"..... MACHO ..... very interesting ....."
Heh, heh, heh ..... it could just be a guise. But I bet the Italians would love the name!
Hello again ...
I tried to partecipate with a polite "Global Trainer" name ... what about?
what about all the sexy italian film stars, starting with sophialoren, or italian musical terms such as soprano, funissimo or something
..... funissimo .....
What the hell is "funissimo" ?
This is not, within my memory, an italian term .....
Anyone who entered care to share their entries?
I went with Mantra.
Alenia Aermacchi's mishap ?
They choose the name "MASTER" .....
http://concorsom346.aermacchi.it/
seemingly violating the 3rd rule of the competition : "the proposed name must not replicate or recall other names already in use on other aircraft" .....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miles_Master
And now ..... ?
It's just a thought; has anyone used "VIPER" for a fast jet trainer?
I have cunningly been waiting in the wings to lull you all into a false sense of security. I cannot believe that none of you have come up with the only, the perfect, the brilliant, the extraordinarily appropriate name for this Italian masterpiece. It simply must be, of course, wait for it; are you ready?
It shall be the "BALBO". Why, do I hear you all muttering?? Well, just think about the name. Surely it rings bells in your collective memories with regard to pre WWII Italian aviation history?
Dear Rapier, I wonder if the key word being "in use" in that phrase you quoted? It is misleading, but I wonder if that was the spirit they meant?
Anyway, I did suggest "Maestro" which would seem more appropriate (sour grapes!!), and also "Aquila" which I think is a fantastic name (even more sour grapes!!!).Sadly I won't be realising a dream of flying in a fast jet trainer just yet!Congrats to the winners, are thy Flight! readers?
Dakota 67 .....
You are completely right .....
Italo Balbo was, without the shadow of a doubt, a great aviator ..... but ..... unfortunately he was also a key person (a founding member) in the National Fascist Party ..... so ..... in Italy, his name would have been considered "highly politically incorrect" .....
Oh! How bothersome...very remiss of me to have forgotten Musso whatshisname and his bully-boys. But wait; yet another spark of (modest) genius...how about "LOLOBRIGIDA"...that rather jolly nice actor lady? Spirited, talented, very aerodynamic and, no doubt a great mentor and role model. Are we Kiwis not just as smart as you Euro chappies?
Right again ..... Dakota 67 .....
Gina Lollobrigida was a myth in my teens .....
Solenoid .....
The italian text of rule 3 was very clear :
"Non verranno accettate denominazioni uguali o simili a quelle già utilizzate in campo aeronautico"
So, I am sorry, they made a blunder .....
Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha, LOLOBRIGIDA!
They should use Teacher. Goes along with Typhoon and Tornado, was never used by any aeroplane or code (Pacific, NATO, ...) and makes reference to training.
..... Teacher ..... ?
Yes ..... a proper term ..... but they chose in a different way ..... going wrong because the selected name "Master" was already in use, making so fun of 4,000 international participants who proposed many other original names .....
