Airline Bankruptcies Set To Double

Airline bankruptcies around the world are set to double over the winter to at least 70 for the year, the director general of the European Regional Airlines (ERA) industry body said on Thursday.

"We are now up to around 35 (bankruptcies) this year. I see at least that number over the winter," Mike Ambrose said on the sidelines of the group's annual conference.

He added that the current climate for airlines was "far more significant, far more far-reaching" than the period after the attacks on New York in 2001, describing the current year as a "year of hell".

"At 9/11 there was a terrorist attack that created a loss of confidence in safety. This is far more pernicious -- it is a loss of confidence in investment," he said.

"There are a major set of problems -- such as governments shoring up banks -- that go way outside aviation and take longer to resolve," he added.

Airlines have struggled throughout 2008 amid a cocktail of high fuel prices, slowing consumer demand and the impact of the credit crisis on bank liquidity.

Ambrose called for a lower regulatory burden for airlines, estimating that a European scheme to make airlines pay more for carbon emissions could add EUR6 million euros (USD$8.23 million) a year to the cost of a typical regional airline.

"Far more than 50 percent of an airline's cost base is out of its control -- with fuel, navigation fees, airport fees, carbon permits and other regulations. We have to try to reverse this trend," he said in a speech earlier on Thursday.

The legislation for a European Trading Scheme (ETS) to reduce carbon emissions has already been passed in Brussels, but the details are still being examined by the European parliament.

Ambrose said in the interview he hoped it would not be finalized by the time European elections get underway next year, allowing him to fight the proposals with a new set of politicians.

ERA said in a statement its member airlines had reported combined passenger growth of 3.7 percent in the months January to June -- the lowest increase since 2001.

Looks like you can add LTE to the list.  They suspended all operations this morning.

Another one bites the dust....

Hansung Airlines, Korea's first low cost carrier, has cancelled all flights from Saturday.

The company announced Friday it would halt operations on both of its routes from Gimpo to Jeju and Cheongju to Jeju.

Since launching in the summer of 2005, Hansung has chalked up a deficit of some W27 billion (US$1=W1,303), which company representatives attribute to surges in oil prices, the weakening won, and failure to raise new funds.

The carrier has sold tickets for flights up to January of next year, but has failed to confirm whether it will refund tickets or arrange alternative flights for its customers.

BritishJet.Com was never really an airline. It was simply a brand name. They operated a single MD90 leased from Hello AG of Switzerland and operated on their AOG. For a time their callsign was BritishJet and the operator designated itself the code BJC, but this was soon revoked by the civil aviation department and the flights operated under the Hello (FHE) callsign henceforth.

Russian Airlines feel the pinch

Russia's aviation authority is suspending the flights of none regional airlines, due to unpaid their bills

The authority, known as Rosaeronavigatsia, is owed between 10,000 and 19m roubles ($726,000;£416,000) by each carrier.

The suspension will come into effect on 17 October.

The airlines affected include Interavia and Dalavia, both of which fly to the Far East and Asia.

The other airlines stopped from flying are Aeroshchit, the Bugaruslan Flying School, Irkutsk Aeroclub ROSTO, Omskavia, Tesis and Ulan-Ude Aviation Plant Vyborg.

A statement from the authority said: "Despite repeated appeals from Rosaeronavigastia to the management of these companies, they currently have considerable unpaid debts."

Alma (Mexico) becomes latest Mexican carrier to cease ops

Mexican regional carrier ALMA has ceased operations and filed for bankruptcy, citing the global economic crisis, the increase in fuel prices and the devaluation of the Mexican peso.

ALMA, which has operated domestic flights in Mexico since 2006 using a fleet of 50-seat Bombardier CRJs, is suspending all operations immediately. The airline states that it is bankrupt and is seeking court protection.
