An Air Europa flight from Glasgow to Lanzarote in the Canary Islands crashed off the runway today as it was about to land.

Flight UX-196 developed problems with its undercarriage as it was about to touch down and it finally landed in beach area near the airport.

All 74 passengers and crew were uninjured, according to local authorities in Lanzarote.

El Mundo newspaper, citing sources from Air Europa, said the plane developed problems with its undercarriage as it came into land early today.

Lanzarote airport has been closed while an investigation is launched.

The incident comes over two months after a Spanair flight crashed as it was about to take off from Madrid Barajas airport, killing 154 people.

Data from the Spanair McDonnell Douglas MD-82’s black box showed the aircraft had faulty wing flaps and that the take-off warning system had failed to sound, according to an initial report by the Spanish Civil Aviation Investigation Commission.

Two mechanics who carried out repair work on the Spanair plane that crashed in August are being investigated for manslaughter.
