The San Juan route will be operated with the airline’s new Boeing 737-800, which will offer additional seating capacity.

From May next year, AirTran Airways will resume its seasonal service to Bermuda with four weekly flights, increasing to daily flights in June.

Paul Wiedefeld, executive director of BWI Marshall Airport, said: “This service from Southwest and AirTran will provide our customers with added opportunities for travel to important leisure markets.

“BWI Marshall travellers will have more low-fare options to popular destinations.”

AirTran Airways is a wholly owned subsidiary of Southwest Airlines.

Last year was a new record year for BWI, with passenger traffic increasing 2.1% over the previous annual record in 2010 to 22.4 million passengers.

International passenger traffic increased 11% in 2011.

Passenger traffic has continued to climb in 2012. Steady growth has led to a number of monthly records for passengers, including July 2012, the busiest month in the history of BWI with more than 2.2 million passengers.
