Dear sir, I am producing a social history documentary for BBC Four about the golden age of civil aviation in the 1930s when Britain ruled the skies. We'll be making the contrast between life 'on the ground' with Britain in the grip of the Great Depression and life 'in the air' – with its glamour, modernity and adventure. The programme will celebrate the pioneers of commercial flight, tell the Imperial Airways / British Airways story (from the mid 20s to the late 30s) and offer a fascinating insight into the lives of the rich and famous passengers who travelled on unexplored routes to uncharted lands across the Empire. We are particularly interested in the human stories – accounts from passengers, former pilots, airline staff etc. We will be filming in July and August, so I have to make contact with people at the earliest possible stage. I'd be very grateful if you could assist me with regards to finding: CONTRIBUTORS Any survivors (1930s pilots, crew, passengers, designers, civil aviation pioneers) who can give first-hand accounts Relatives of the above who have had memories and anecdotes (and perhaps photographic/film archive or diaries/recordings etc) passed down to them.
