The airline has also increased the frequency of its service between Manchester and Lyon from five to six flights a week.

Cathal O’Connell, CEO of bmi regional, said: “The launch of this route to Lyon is a continuation of bmi regional’s promise to serve key economic and tourism hubs across Europe.

“Launching the second route and increasing our frequency to Lyon is a significant investment to position the airline for growth in France.

“The fact that Birmingham and Lyon are twinned cities means an added benefit for both cities.

“Our choice of destinations is based on business and leisure customer demand.

“Lyon is the second city of France, and is a major centre for banking as well as for chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotech and video game software.”

William Pearson, aviation development director at Birmingham Airport, said: “It is fantastic news that bmi regional has chosen to launch Lyon as one of its first services from Birmingham.

"Lyon is currently unserved from the airport, meaning passengers have even more choice from their airport to visit this fantastic destination."

“As an airport we strive to cater for all our passengers and having bmi regional on board as a full service airline complements our portfolio.”

Direct flights to Lyon from Birmingham start on Monday May 13, with six flights per week.
