How will the 787 materials fare in a crash

In 2005, as design of the Dreamliner advanced, a previously undisclosed Boeing analysis showed a crash that is survivable in a largely metal 777 would be deadly in a 787: The impact would shatter the bottom of the 787 fuselage and deliver a jolt severe enough to kill all the passengers.

Even Impact damage to a composite will take longer duration than an Al alloy repair.

Quite a sobering and disturbing thought. A Boeing engineer was actually sacked for going public about his concerns of the 787 survivability. He also argued that the composite material would release many more toxic fumes in the event of a fire. It would be interesting to see how the A350 compares. Although it too is composite like the Dreamliner, Airbus has taken a different approach to manufacturing using several composite panels instead of single piece barrels that Boeing have opted for.
