Boeing has confirmed that it has rescheduled its Boeing 787 test flights and the first delivery/revenue service.
1st Test flight has postponed till 1st Quarter of 2008
First Delivery is delayed till November 2008
Lets hope that Airbus jump on the marketing opportunity! Just like Boeing have done in the past!
Maybe it should be renamed 'Delayedliner!'
I don't think its the best time to reveal, especially when SIA are about to unveil their A380s next week! Poor Delayedliner (i like that phrase)
This would be an verry oppertune time to come out with some solid news on the 350
Ever hear the expression about the pot calling the kettle black?
I don't understand how flightglobal.com can feature this question when the 787 is 6 months late and the A380 is 2 years late.
Lets face it despite the marketing hype both A380 and 787 were always certs to run beyond schedule. Boeing had problems with teh 707 and 747 in the past, and both these machines are introducing new technology. On top of that they are both being put through at a time when the industry is undermanned and overstretched.
The only real question on 787 is how much Boeing underestimated the job in hand and what contingencies they (the engineers!!) have in place just in case. I have no doubt the 787 will eventually fly and go into service and desopite teh negative press from some in the US teh A380 will do well.
I hear a lot of names for the 787 EIS.
I´ll call it 7Late7.
A good name, nes pas?

Very good indeed . Maybe we are being too cruel to Boeing, the Dreamliner still looks amazing, just a shame it is going to take that bit longer to get here...
Give me a break! The anti-Boeing slant here is pathetic! The 787 is 6 months late and everyone is making a huge case. The A380 is over 2 years late, but that's okay. Pfft.
Lets begin by renaming the A380 to A3L8y (A3Latey). Perhaps we should rename the A350 XWB to A350 DCW (Design Changes Weekly).
Yes, it should underperform like all those other Boeing projects, correct?
The Jason: Yes, it should underperform like all those other Boeing projects, correct?
Come on, it's just a bit of fun, i am as excited about the Dreamliner as you obviously are, but Boeing are bound to get a little bit of stick for announcing delays just as Airbus should. I do like your A3Latey idea!!!
Well I for one am sorry to hear that this Beautiful plane will be late....But lets get this into perspectrive...Its a BRAND NEW DESIGN Top to Bottom and to my dismay...being manufactured in WAAAAY too many places.
But the Main two problems are NOT of Boeings makeing...They are due to Fasteners not being available...and ...Software engineering, I can assure you Boeing is KICKING some butt right now and these issues will be remidied VERY quickly, I dont look for any further delays as these issues were about solved when they were announced, the financial loss to Boeing will be no wheres near as bad as it was for Airbus on the A380. Watch for the A350 XWB to also be delayed as it seems to be the norm....on both sides of the pond.
7Late7...Thats cute A3L8ly also good

I think the airbus people are jealous.
I always thought that fasteners meant nuts and bolts and rivets.. Surely Boeing can't mean a world shortage of nuts and bolts and rivets? ... but then the 787 is made from "advanced composite materials", (plastics), presumably stuck together like some Air-fix kit.. so, a lack of "fasteners" possibly means .. a lack of glue. So there must be a world shortage of glue!
In colonial days Brit. ex-pats got 6 months leave. So maybe all the Boeing Indian ex-pat software engineers decided to take their 6 months leave simultaneously! (To allay fears and to be fair to Boeing: Aircraft wings have been stuck together for many years now and is definitely a proven technology!).
well, it looks like something common that is delaying both planes. 380 was delayed becuase the design software used in germany was different that the one used in france, so the electrical connections did not match.. i mean .. COMMON!
aand now to learn that the 787 is delayed because of software. WoW!
One would have thought that the mistakes are learnt but not re-created! :)
TurboAltenator: I always thought ...

Ignorance is bliss.
You guys just got to be kidding, right?
How in the world do you have the courage to come and laugh and talk about delays in aviation? Yes because it is very clear that all those comment came from people that don´t know how to trim an aircraft anymore.
If you call the 787 the delay liner, what should we call the A380 then. Does the 380 stands for 380 days of delay. And i´m beeing reasonable cause in a real life scenario we should do the math and multiply that by 2 (A380x2). And then say that the "2" stands for your double decker, hahaha...
Look at your selves first before making those comments.
Fly safe....... If you can, hahahah
There are a few reasons why the 'Delayedliner' is getting so much stick(aside from the fact its ugly).
Boeing have been doing so much bragging about it and enjoying the delays to the A380.
Displaying the 787 held together with cellotape.
Blaming everyone else for the delays except themselves.
I have always liked Boeing aircraft (except the Trident copied 727) especially the 757 and 747, but they really have shot themselves in the foot with all the talk of the 787. It hasnt even flown yet whereas the A380 has put in many test hours.
What does another delay mean for the 787?
It means Boeing's incredible marketing (that produced all those orders) is beginning to "delaminate" - something that hopefully won't affect its product. The company may have appeared serenely in control from the outside but the organisational structure is clearly under pressure on the inside.
It may mean that we would be wise to consider future Boeing claims regarding the timing, safety and cost of the overall project as "optimistic" or incomplete in nature.
It means that the 787 is an all-new product with all-new challenges and potentially all-new benefits - it may also require an all-new development and testing timescale.
Is it a bad aircraft because its delayed? - No. It will be a better aircraft as a result!

Seems like some people are bitter and envious. I'm sorry for your pain. I hope you are not one of the 10,000 Airbus employees losing their job. If you are, I can understand your bitterness. However, if you are one of the Airbus employees being investigated for insider trading and you are guilty, then ….
MikeD:Seems like some people are bitter and envious.
No need for being "bitter n envious" about 7L7..
Next decade 350XWB have taken the raisins of the Boeing cake, easy as that.

The 787 has not even flown and is already late. And incidentally, I heard a rumour that it won't fly and will likely be scrapped which may be why the first flight has been delayed so that a second can be prepared.
Controversial I know!
And how likely is it to build an aircraft in a matter of months?
I believed using the second build 787 was a contingency plan for the first flight. They are building several for the flight tests. The first one may be used for structural test such as wing strength test. BTW, I am only speculating about that, I've only heard that the second 787 may be the first one to fly.
I say, we should stop rumors and speculation and wait to see if there are any additional delays before the pot can call the kettle black.
