Budget airlines are well known for charging passengers for everything from a packet of peanuts to a glass of water – with some even charging for a visit to the toilet.

And now low-cost carrier Ryanair has done it again – charging €3 for its latest app for Android smartphones.

While most airports and airlines provide their apps for free, Ryanair has taken a different route.

The airline launched a similar app for iPhones, at the same price, earlier this year, when CEO, Michael O’Leary, said: “If people want the app, they can pay for it.”

Both apps allow users to book flights, access timetables, read the latest Ryanair news, find out about seat sales, as well as book car rentals with Hertz.

Ryanair’s Stephen McNamara said: “Ryanair is pleased to launch the Android version of our app, which will allow passengers to book Europe’s lowest fares, manage their booking, and keep up-to-date with Ryanair news, directly from their Android smartphones and tablets.

“Passengers can now book Ryanair flights anywhere they take their phone, day or night, ensuring that they never miss out on our lowest fares.

“Our iPhone/iPad app, launched in September, has proven to a huge hit with passengers and we’re sure Android users with be equally pleased with our new Android version.”

Passengers using the app will eventually be able carry an electronic boarding pass on their mobile phone.

O’Leary confirmed, earlier this year, that passengers would be able to one day board his planes without a paper boarding pass.
