THIS "shredded" and incapacitated F-111 flew for 30 minutes
over south-east Queensland homes before a spectacular aircraft
carrier-style landing at Amberley air base.
The jet was at about 900m altitude on a test bombing raid at Evan's
Head, NSW, when its nose dome struck a pelican, which was sucked into
an engine.
While the two RAAF crew are being hailed as heroes at the base for
their skilful recovery and landing, a RAAF spokesman admitted the
30-minute flight back to Amberley last Friday was over built-up areas.
