Spending a few moments looking at the digitised copy of Flight for the week 26th July 1957, 50 years ago, I see a survey of the world's Aero Engines.
"It has been reported in the U.S.A. that the J58 is a high-airflow engine intended for operation at Mach 3 and sized to give 22,500 lb static thrust, conforming to the Newbury Memorandum requiring each new engine to exceed the previous generation's output by 50 per cent".
How many analysts of the day would have dreamt up such a revolutionary airframe as the mighty SR-71 Blackbird being wrapped around two of these powerplants from such a snippet of information?
Is there anybody out there?
