    GATWICK ROUNDUP 01-09-09

    VISITORS
A very quiet start to the month with nothing to report today.

    FLEET NEWS
Adria. One for the photographers among you. Adria CRJ2 S5-AAD (7166) now sports a special scheme advertising Internet provider SIOL (see the Skyliner site for a photo).
British A/W B772 G-YMMT (36518) was ferried from Cardiff to LHR this afternoon as BAW9183 & is due to operate BAW027 to Hong Kong late this evening. It is understood that B733 G-LGTE (24908) well be ferried to Goodyear, AZ, probably still UK registered, for modifications prior to going to WebJet. B735 G-GFFH (27354) will be flown from Gatwick to Glasgow in about a week's time for end of lease maintenance. It will then be ferried to LHR for painting for Air Midwest of Nigeria.
MK A/L. Reversing the recent trend, MK A/L is expected to take delivery of B742F G-MKLA (23711 ex G-BDXM, TF-ATX) later this month.

    ROUTE NEWS
    None today.

    MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS
Sky Europe finally succumbed to the inevitable & announced today that it had ceased operations with immediate effect. Not surprisingly, Smart Wings, Ryanair & easyJet have all jumped in to offer rescue packages for stranded passengers.

Here goes with the customary look back at the previous month. On the airline front, the long-awaited Iraqi A/W service has still to begin & it is looking increasingly likely that it will operate to LHR rather than to Gatwick. It is some time since I have had to report the loss of an airline, but Daallo A/L has announced that it will suspend its Djibouti service during September. In addition, Delta's long-running Cincinnati service finished two days ago. On the bright side, however, we now have Windjet to look forward to from late October.
Looking at the first visits this month, we had the lowest total this year so far, 43, but it was still up on last year's 37 (the smallest monthly total in 2008). Breaking the number down, we had 28 new airliners (26 in 2008)& 15 new GA visitors (11 in 2008).
Among the airliners, we saw two new sub-variants, namely an A318 (G-EUNA), as opposed to A318CJ, & our first executive EMB190BJ (A6-ARK), as opposed to a straight EMB190/195. EasyJet took delivery of a further 3 more A320s, though the influx of new Ryanair B738s visiting us slowed to a trickle with only 2 appearing during August. There were, however, plenty of Turkish airliners making appearances with 8 that we hadn't seen before. Best among the airliners were probably EMB190BJ A6-ARK, Swiftair MD-83 EC-JJS, Farnair Europe Fk27 HA-FAD (still present), Bulgarian Air Charter MD-82 LZ-FDC, Sky A/L A320 TC-SKJ, Ukraine International's first B738, UR-PSA, & several visits from Afriqiyah's A332 5A-ONF. We also had our first visit from a Vueling A320 (EC-JGM operating for Atlas Blue). The only military newcomer was RAF Hercules C4 ZH865, the fourth RAF Herc to make its first visit this year. On the biz front, I would single out Astra C-GTDO, Lear 45 CS-TFR, Citation 525A LZ-FNB & HS125 F-HGBY as being of most interest.

    Happy spotting!
