Chipmunk is greatest military trainer
Well I think we all agree that the DHC-1 is a delightful little aircraft, but I wonder whether it would be classed as a "Military" trainer? Certainly it was used as a primary trainer by many armed services, but I see it as just a basic trainer which could be used by any organisation, aero club or private owner. As another example I would place the NA T-6 Texan/Harvard as principally a military trainer; and one of the very best of all time.
When our Royal New Zealand Air Force replaced their Harvards with the dinky little NZ built Airtrainer, many of us thought it a retrograde move. Indeed, it is ironic that several RNZAF T-6s were purchased by private individuals and are still going strong today. Strange how an Air Force said the Harvard was too expensive to operate, but individual civilians seem to manage OK.
