Sir Frank Whittle for his conception, design and development of the jet turbine engine, a device that has changed the world since mass travel has brought with it closer communication, which has brought with it mass political stability and freedom from global war since 1945. All the more meritorious because Whittle had to fight against prejudice, bureaucracy, lack of foresight and lack of funding whilst retaining his own vision. Here was a true man of courage and conviction.
