Iran is planning to relocate an airport Ahvaz Airport, in the southwest of the country, after discovering oil under its runway, according to reports.

The National Iranian Oil Company intends to buy the airport, the state broadcaster’s website said.

Mohammad Rasoulinejad, managing director of the Iranian Airports Company, said: “The government has approved the relocation of the airport.”

He added that the new airport would be built 15 kilometres from the city.

Rasoulinejad said the move would pave the way for the airport’s much needed expansion.

The airport is among the country’s busiest with around 30 flights per day.
