Far East trip log Part II;

Kuala Lumpur/Jakarta 05/11;

After an enjoyable day at KUL, we flew down to Jakarta on the last flight of the day, QZ 7605 operated by Indonesia AirAsia B737 PK-AWC, flight was quiet so had a row of seats each. (AirAsia are like easy and ryan, buy on board, free for all seating etc).
On arrival at Jakarta had to get a visa, very simple process, there is a visa office before immigration lines, just pay $10 USD, you'll get a sticker in the passport then clear immigration as normal. Stayed 2 nights at the excellent Jakarta Airport Hotel (http://jakartaairporthotel.com/), located above terminal 2 at CGK. $100 USD for a twin room inc buffet breakfast, all rooms will have a view out, we had 02 and 04.
Terminal 2 at CGK is the international terminal along with domestic flights for Garuda and Merpati. Aircraft using this terminal will i would say use the runway that side prob 95% or higher of the time. There are no viewing area's at terminal 2 but you can spot from your room anyway.
The domestic terminal 1 can be reached by shuttle bus. Aircraft using T1 would again use its associated runway probably 95% of the time too. In the 2 days we were there i only saw a JAL 767 land on the domestic side but a few domestice movements did use the international side. We just alternated between the two terminals when we felt like it.
T1 domestic has 5 viewing area's (signposted as waving gallery's). The first and last offer limited views, the middle 3 are better. As you probably know there are a lot of stored aircraft at CGK and its worth walking around to all viewing area's getting different angles and we also walked between T1 and T2 as well to get a bit more.
Over the 2 days we got all the Lion Air B737/900's, still needed a few Garuda 737's. The Garuda 330's seem to operate more from Denpassar (Bali), we only saw 3 of the 6, and only 1 of thier 747/400's although we saw 3 leased jumbo's too. Saudi Arabian were a surpirse, on the second day we got 3 747's and a 777, other Middle East airlines like Ek, QR and EY seemed to be daily as well as frequent visits by SQ, CX, CI and QF among others.

Very enjoyable couple of days, nice to see 737/200 and MD80's in abundance. Flew to Singapore on Lufthansa B747 D-ABVO LH 779.

Singapore 07/11;

Stayed at the Ambassador transit hotel for 2 nights, reasonable prices, basic rooms. Bear in mind if you stay at the
transit hotel and you have luggage checked in, you won't be able to claim it until you exit. We flew out with Tiger
Airways from the budget terminal so on leaving the hotel, cleared immigration, got our bags from the lost and found
office then rechecked in for our next flight, its pretty easy really, no problems. Logged the following before bed;

JA608A B767 ANA
RP-C8163 A320 Philippines
B-6095 A330 China Eastern
9V-SBC A319 Silk Air
9V-SLB/C/G A320 Silk Air

Singapore 777's-
9V-SVF/SQL/SWG/SWN/SRI/SRC/SRF

Singapore 08/11;

Not easy to spot,even airside, plenty of walking invloved. For an hour or 2 in the morning aircraft were landing/taking off
towards the sea so we had a spot down in T1 by the 'D' gates where we could get both sides. When the runways changed the other way it became more awkward so we just concentrated on one side, kept an eye on the screens and went to the other side if required.
The girls on the information desks were very helpfull and had a/c details and reg's on thier screens and imparted information when i asked for it without problems.

A380 = 9V-SKB/F/D/E/A

SQ have 5 A340/500's, flying to EWR at 1215 and LAX at 1615 daily, both arrive back around 0600 so you'll need 2 days to get them all.There always seemed to be 1 parked up too so i think they stand 1 down each time, rotate the fleet.
With the A380's, there are 6 aircraft for 3 routes, daily to NRT at 2345, SYD at 2040 and LHR at 1255 and 2345, arrivals back from SYD at 2150, NRT at 1755 and LHR at 0735 and 1845. Again 1 aircraft seemed to be stood down each day.

Went through immigration and got  our bags back no problem, caught the bus up to the budget terminal (used by Tiger
and Cebu Pacific). Terminal is quite basic but views can be had either side of the terminal and airside at the gates.
Flew up to Bangkok on Tiger A320 9V-TAH TR 108, 2.00 hr flight, Tiger very good and you get an allocated seat.

Part III to follow, Bangkok and Hong Kong
