Log Brazil Trip 22/09-05/10 Part II

Sao Paolo CGH 25/09;

CGH is closed at night but opens up around 0545. Usually 3 x Ce208 and 2 X PA31 are the first departures (cargo flights) before the airliners start up. It is a domestic airport but very busy and has a good mix of GA aircraft too.

Flew to Rio SDU on GOL B737/700 PR-GOO

Rio DJ SDU 25/09;

Flying into SDU is quite exciting, you get a good view of Rio (sit on the right if possible) before flying over the top of SDU and executing a 270 degree right turn to land. Viewing isn't great but a huge glass window near the arrivals hall offers the best views and it is okay for pictures too. Airliner traffic is limited to the Sao Paolo/Rio shuttles with TAM A319, Gol B73G and Varig B733 only. You also get a Total ATR and Ocean Air FK50 and a fair bit of GA and Mil traffic. Out of the terminal to the right are biz hangers, cross the road and go onto the footbridge over the highway for good views. A walk along the road will take you past the military hangers too, you maye be able to see 125's and E110's-be carefull getting bino's out along here, military guards everywhere.

Caught the shuttle bus to Galeao. There are 2 busses, an express bus at around £2 or limited stop for around a £1. We caught the cheaper one which only took around 30 mins anyway. Just after going past the hangers on the bus you'll see the ferry terminal and dockyards. A Navy Sik 61 is preserved on the right hand side and easily readable, N-3018.

Rio DJ GIG 25/09;

Keep and eye out as you turn in to the airport for the FAB HS748 in the tree's on display, 2502. We walked down to get a picture later in the trip. Only real place to view is in terminal 1 from the observation deck/cafe-you get a pretty good view of all things from here, there is another viewing deck up past the Luxor Hotel which is usefull for parked aircraft that don't move all day. Not overly busy but some nice bits all the same, keep on the ball for military movements which can sneak by wuickly and may be difficult to read off as we found out. There are some stored 727's and C130's here which we walked down to get on our return later in the trip.

Flew to Porto Alegre on TAM FK100 PT-MRH.

Porto Alegre 26/09;

Nice airport to the South of the country, spotting from the top level of the terminal very easy. TAM and GOL the main airlines here although you also get the NHT Let410's based. There is a Varig museum here but we found it closed, as well as quite a few maintenance hangers. I believe B737's are overhauled here too and a B733 in KD Avia clrs was seen but with no reg (believed to be ex US Air). A fair bit of GA too but most of the GA hangers are behind tree's.

Flew to Brasilia on TAM A320 PT-MZR

Brasilia 26/06;

This has got to have one of the best terminal buildings i have ever seen. The front/entrance is all open plan, 3 levels-obviously arrivals, departures then observation level+food/resteraunts etc on the top floor. The top floor has a view on 3 sides with plenty of seating, toilets etc. We arrivved at 1845 and the airport was very busy. After spending most of the following day too it would seem the evenings are the busiest time with quiet a few cargo flights arrinving too. 2 paralell runways with the terminal in between. Some of the FAB transport fleet is based here too, you can see the hangers behind the tree's. Movements are quite frequent, you have to be quick to read those small numbers sometimes. The 3 ex Transbrasil B767's are stored here, easily seen and read off from the terminal and there are 3 Vasp B737's nearby too though only 2 are visible from the terminal. It is only a 10 min walk to go get them and you can get pictures too. Varig MD11 PP-VQG was also here but that has now gone to Rio. There is quiet a bit of cargo a GA stuff as well, walk out of the terminal and turn right and follow the fence and you'l get the large part of it (all the cargo, most GA)
