Log Vienna Trip 22-26 June 2009;

Took advantage of cheap fares with Aer Lingus and thought i'd go to Vienna as i haven't been since the early 90's and need the Austrian 777's and some other bits. Got the flight for £28, it goes at 1135, not quite daily (yet).
Was planning a few days spotting and a few sight seeing as i had the missus with me, however the weather was awfull virtually all week so spent most of the time at the airport

If anybody is a bit slack on the Austrian fleet like me then here is a bit of info that maybe usefull;

They have 4 B777's which fly to JFK (1105), NRT (1400) and  BKK (2320). All are daily flights except Narita which doesn't operate on a Wednesday. They return back at 0535 (BKK), 0840 (JFK) and 1555 (NRT-not on Thurs). Bear in mind the BKK flight is away 30 hours as it sits in BKK for a few hours, ie leaves Monday night at 2320, it won't be back till 0535 Weds morning, so you'll need 2 days to get all the 777's.

The 6 B767's are a bit easier, they daily fly to PEK (2015), DEL (1335), YYZ (1120), IAD (1130), TLV twice daily at 1035 and 2025 and finally DXB (1720 daily except Mondays). The Beijing flight is away the longest, it gets back the following day at 1815 so you should get all them in 2 days easily.

We saw all the Dash8/400's but it took 4 days to get the last one. I think there are a/c based out of Salzburg as we were missing 1 of the CRJ's too and a Dash8/300.

We saw all the NIKI fleet but it took 4 days as they operate regularly out of Graz, Linz, Salzburg and Innsbruck. I only saw A320 OE-LEO once all week. Lauda were pretty much the same but i didn't see OE-LNS at all, it had been operating from Salzburg.

Sky Europe seem to have 4 (or possibly more) a/c based there too (i didn't realise they were still operating)

Other airlines of note that visit Vienna;

Tarom - 318's twice daily and an ATR in the morning.
JAT -  ATR twice daily (though often the same one).
Finnair - twice daily Embraer's though 319's did turn up somedays.
Egypt Air - B738 daily
Qatar - A320 daily
Royal Jordanian - A319 4 days a week
Eva Air - A330 3 days a week
China Airlines - A340 3 days a week
Turkish Airlines - frequent daily flights with 737/320/321
Aeroflot - 319's daily, sometimes twice a day
My Air - CRJ900's several times week
Lot - ATR daily and sometimes E175 or 737
Croatian - DH8/400 twice a day
Emirates - B773 daily
Iran Air - A320  twice a week

Korean Air Cargo have 12 weekly flights  and Jade Cargo are starting sometime this Summer too.

Viewing is probably best from car park 3, you can see both runways, the Austrian hanger complex and some of the biz stands. Car Park 4 used to be  better but the view is partly blocked by the new terminal now and you ill miss departing a/c. Finally there is an airside bus tour, from the main terminal follown signs towards P4 then visitair. The visitair centre opens at 0830, first tour is at 0900 and pretty much hourly though not sure when the last one
operates,  and it costs €7. Its worth doing as it takes you right past the Austrian hangers and down to the biz ramps. We done it twice, first time the Austrian hangers were shut but the biz hangers were open, second time was the other way round!

Right, enough waffling, the logs. As it was chucking it down when we arrived we decided to spot from the cafe in T2. It has reasonable views but we were lucky in the fact that all departing a/c were using the runway in front of us, and all biz has to taxi by anyway.

We stayed at the EuroHotel Vienna Aiport for 4 nights, it was only £33 on expedia, about 10 mins shuttle bus away, similar to a travelodge but somewhat better.
There is a shuttle from the airport provided by C&K services, just go to their desk (in arrivals) and someone will take you to the hotel. A hotel shuttle operates back to the airport in the morning regularly up till Noon. Our rate didn't include the shuttle but they let us on everyday anyway. The hotel does breakfast for €9 but we ate at the airport every day, the cafe in T2 does nice food, and if all else fails there is the Mcdonalds in arrivals or the supermarket near the railway station  .

Always planned to spend the day at the airport anyway today, swopped between the car park and cafe and also done an airside bus tour too.
