With all of the problems and delays, this programme has definitely had its issues. When can we expect first flight

Well, it looks like Boeing is getting awfully close to flying 787 for the first time. We could be as little as 12 days away right now. Several sources with direct knowledge of the program tell me that the first flight window opens on December 14 at 10am and stretches through the rest of the month. ZA001 went through some early engine runs to "dust off" after the extended stay in the hangar.
