Ye Gods! Only 11M shorter than a Saturn V with only 15% of the latter's payload to Parking Orbit: progress eh? Von Braun must be laughing down there...

krispace:  how can you possibly compare the Ares 1 to Saturn V?  Saturn V was a 3 stage vehicle designed for a completely different mission.  It included 5 VERY large engines in the boost phase and 5 more VERY large engines in its second stage.  Ares 1 is a 2 stage vehicle using only a single solid booster and a single VERY large engine in its second stage.  The second stage engine is actually a modernized version of the Saturn V second stage engines.  Hence the Ares 1 delivers a smaller payload at a fraction of the cost of a Saturn V.
