On April 8, SAS will begin a six times weekly Airbus A340 service to San Francisco from Copenhagen.

The flight, which will take roughly 11 hours in total, is expected to prove popular with business travellers.

Rickard Gustafson, Scandinavian Airlines CEO said: “North America is an important and growing market for SAS which is always looking to serve markets where there is high demand from Nordic companies and individual travellers. We saw a particularly strong demand in the growth area of San Francisco and the US West Coast and hope the new route will benefit both business and leisure travellers.”

The loss-making carrier is in the midst of a turnaround programme, selling its ground and cargo handling activities to Swissport and outsourcing its call centre activity.
