ESA/NASA Spacelab (long Module + Double Pallet configuration)
This NASA Marshall Space Flight Center image depicts one of several possible configuratons of a modular Spacelab. The Spacelab was built by European contractors under the oversight of the European Space Agency as a payload for the Space Shuttle. In this concept two pallets are used to hold the equipment for the Atmospheric, Magnetospheric and Plasmas in Space (AMPS) experiment. The AMPS equipment would be exposed to space when the Orbiter's payload doors were open. Scientists would operate the equipment in the pressurised module just forward of the pallets. The first Spacelab mission was STS-9 in 1983 and the final flight was STS-90 in 1998.
