Flights at Stansted airport have been delayed after more than 50 protesters occupied a secure area near the runway.

Climate action group Plane Stupid said it started the protest at 0315 GMT by breaching security.

The runway was closed for about two hours as a precaution, but reopened at 0810 GMT. Passengers are being advised to contact their airlines.

Apparently the "protesters had brought concrete blocks and 6ft-high security fencing with them and erected a "stockade" about 50m (164 ft)". ANy no-one in security noticed...Indifferent. It may be a big area but jeez

There's something bizarre about protesters wearing hi-vis jackets too. I hope for their sake it was as a disguise rather than to comply with health and safety regs, otherwise they've lost any cool points at the next protester AGM - Swampy and the other guys from the Newbury bypass will be laughing their dirty socks off at them!!

I heard a telephone interview with one of the protesters on Radio 4 where they were saying how much carbon was being saved for every minute of the protest.... ....which is true, if you don't consider repositioning empty planes from the outbound flights they caused to be cancelled or the 90% of the people that were due to be on those cancelled flights re-booking and getting onto a later aircraft. Hmm

Environmental protest is never going to work if you only present half the story.
