The Big Players in the Middle East are using their profits to achieve what they cannot get from European and Norh American countries. When you have no luck in obtaining more landing spots what better way than to buy stakes in other airlines and use it to feed more traffic to their thirsty mega hub airports and their ever expanding fleets of aircraft.
In the future London, Paris and Frankfurt will be relegated to regional feeder hubs for the Middle Eastern juggernauts.
