Airline food is usually scoffed at for not being very good, but have you ever thought about how healthy it is?

The Diet Detective, Charles Stuart Platkin, has studied the onboard meal offerings of 7 American and one Canadian airline to see which offered the most nutritious food.

Canadians will be pleased to hear that Air Canada topped the list along with Virgin America. Platkin couldn’t say whether or not WestJet or Porter would do a better job because neither of those two Canadian carriers was part of the survey.

Platkin has written a number of weight-loss books along with a TV show on an American cable channel so he’s in tune with what constitutes healthy eating.

He gave high marks to Air Canada for their meals which were designed by a company called Food with a Conscience. Interestingly, they are also a supplier for Air Transat, a charter airline that wasn’t part of Platkin’s survey.

He liked Virgin America’s large choice of food and snacks and was impressed that passengers can order food any time via the touchscreen on the seatbacks in front of them rather than just wait for when the flight attendants are trundling through the cabin with their food carts.

He gave the merging United and Continental airlines decent marks, but was less impressed by the food offerings of US Airways, Jetblue Airways, American Airlines, Delta Airlines and Southwest Airlines.

As for Spirit Airlines, he couldn’t give them any score because they wouldn’t give him any of the information he needed. They were “too busy.”

You can read the full report here. Along with his ratings, Platkin gives recommendations on the healthiest options for each of the airlines along with some ideas for packing your own nutritious snacks.
