The military says two pilots managed to walk away safely after a jet used in training crashed at CFB Cold Lake in northeastern Alberta.
Capt. Nicole Meszaros said the CT-155 Hawk went down shortly before noon Friday, about two kilometres from the runway, in a buffer zone between the base and the community of Cold Lake.
"Both pilots, I am very happy to say, ejected safely," Meszaros said. "They are receiving requisite medical care."
Meszaros did not know if the plane was landing or taking off when it crashed. There was no early word on the cause.
"We will have a flight safety investigation launched to determine the exact cause of this accident."
Meszaros said the unit the pilots were training with, 5 Hawk, does have international students, but she didn't know the nationality of those involved.
The Cold Lake base is near the Alberta-Saskatchewan boundary about 300 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
