Airbus has secured orders for 35 A320neos from an unidentified customer during the final month of 2011, and finally firmed the on-off order for 80 A320neos from Republic Airways.

These agreements, plus orders for 75 A320neos from Mexico's Volaris and US carrier Spirit Airlines, would normally have taken the airframer's total orders for the re-engined type to 1,356.

But Airbus has removed the 130 firm A321neos from American Airlines previously on the backlog, following the carrier's filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

Airbus chief operating officer for customers John Leahy said the decision to relegate the American order was a "conservative" move.

The manufacturer firmed its long-awaited order for 10 A380s with Hong Kong Airlines on 19 December - taking net orders for the double-deck type last year to 19 - and its A320neo deal with the undisclosed customer the following day.

But it suffered the cancellation of six A350-1000s from Abu Dhabi-based Etihad Airways, as well as the loss of six VIP A350s - one -800 and five -900s. The cancelling VIP customer has not been identified but the composition of the order matches that placed by Middle Eastern company MAZ Aviation in 2008.
