It's Apollo 11's 40th anniversary! On 16 July the mission blasted off and on 20 July the first-ever moon walk took place.

Unfortunately I wasn't around then, 1969 was actually 10BB (Before Batfink) but I've since developed an interest in the Apollo missions.

The odd thing is that as remarkable as Apollo 11 was it's never captured my imagination the way some of the other missions have, in particular Apollo 8 (Since I love the Earthrise photo, as explained here) and Apollo 12, mostly because of the three men involved - Conrad, Bean and Gordon - who just strike me as more fun than the crew of Apollo 11. Having said that I'd recommend Michael Collins' autobiography 'Carrying the Fire' to anyone with an interest, although he's often the 'forgotten' member of the crew he's a gifted writer and never seems to have a hint of malice at not having actually walked on the moon.

I am not surprised he has no malice considering no human has ever stepped on the moon! Its all Hollywood Claptrap!

I suppose you believe in the tooth fairy, father Christmas and Nessy! Wake up and smell the coffee boy its the biggest hoax in history!

Even the Mythbusters said the moon landings actually happened!!

We were then in the depth of the Cold War ..... so ..... it was to their advantage to discredit the Americans .....

I remember that my father woke me up in the middle of the night to show me a blurry image on the TV screen. He was saying me that it was a really historical moment. Obviously I was unable to understand what was happening I was 2.9yr old... It was also the first live transmission from our remote TV station in the heart of the Patagonia, in Plaza Huincul, Neuquén, Argentina. (ICAO: SAZW, IATA: CUT)

Who is Curly Watts, and which outfit did he fly for? Actually, I watched the approach and (alleged) touchdown in Aussie and recall thinking that the field of view through that awful little cockpit window was almost as bad as that from from the Vickers Viscount which I was then poling around. But at least their attitude indicators (we used to call them Artificial Horizons back then) were more modern than those ex. Wellington bomber ones we had to use.

Perhaps the "Thunderbirds" team were involved in the hoax? Does "FAB" really mean Fabricated Aeronautical Baloney? And I am still curious as to the real relationship between Lady Penelope and that fellah Parker....mmmmm! I wonder!

Curly Watts was a character in Coronation Street a popular TV Soap in the UK. He was a right nerd in the street who was in to Astromony.

Egad and zounds....that Curly Watts! I was too engrossed in the charms and vivacity of Gail whatsername to notice him. Also I am sorry I demeaned that British "Gem", the Viscount which I rather enjoyed after I figured out its strange systems. Actually, the vis. from the cockpit was not too bad once you scraped the ice from the INSIDE of the windows with one of those kitchen scrapers (700 series). Did you know that the Viscount was to have had a nose section just like the DH Comet but (I think) the BEA pilots kicked up a stink and demanded proper windows for their almost continual bad-weather Euro. ops.

I say go to Mars, set up a base, fuel it with local water and start planting oxygen producing green algae. Bypass the Moon altogether.

So I shouldn't listen a couple of guys on TV with experience in movie special effects (ie - exactly the kid of guys whose help you'd want if you were going to fake something like the moonlandings) but I should listen to a guy on the internet who's apparently a fan of Coronation Street (Don't worry D67 - I didn't know who Curly Watts was either)?
