At first glance I thought it was the classic Captain Video ray gun of the 1950's  BUT, it is indeed a Corner Drill, or more exact a casing for a corner drill.

The corner drill is a drill that is designed to drill holes in tight spaces. The drill bit was mounted to drill at a 90 degree  angle to the drill casing, hence the stubby end that looks like the differencial on the back axel of a rear drive car or truck.

You do not seem to have the wiring, motor trigger switch or drill bit attachment, just the casing which looks 1950s vintage to me.

If you are into Steampunk (Victorian Science Fiction - like Jules Verne... Look it up on Google) the casing would make an excellent start for a Wembly Mk 4 Induction Nebulizer.

Venture on!
