Daocheng Yading Airport in southwest China's Sichuan Province, the world’s highest-altitude civilian airport, is to start operations next May, according to reports.

The news follows a successful test flight, which landed at the airport last week.

An Air China A319 landed at the airport, following a one hour flight from Chengdu.

The carrier is set to launch flights between Yading and Chengdu in May, Tan Heng, an airport official, told Shanghai Daily.

Construction of the airport, which is 4,411 meters above sea level, was completed in August.

Renowned for its beauty, Yading is known as “the last Shangri-La” and “the last pure land on the blue planet”. The airport is 130km from the Yading Nature Reserve.

Bangda Airport, in Qamdo, Tibet, holds the previous record for the world’s highest airport, at 4,334 meters above sea level.

Construction of the Nagqu Dagring Airport, also in Tibet, which will sit at an altitude of 4,436 metres, will eventually steal the title from Daocheng Yading Airport.
