The airline, aka Taimyr Air, was founded in central Siberia following the break up of the Soviet Union, as a joint venture between Norilsk Nickel and the government of the Krasnoyarsk region. Taimyravia primarily carries out aerial work with a fleet of around twenty Mil-8 helicopters, having given up the operation of a small fleet of Antonov An-24/26 turboprops some years ago. The airline has now placed an order for two new ATR42-500s, which are expected to be delivered next year for the launch of new domestic services under the Taimyr Air brand. Norilsk Nickel created an airline subsidiary of Taimyravia in June 2009, under the NordStar brand, which now operates domestic scheduled services and international charters with a fleet currently composed of five leased Boeing 737-800s.
