Airlines Suspending Services: Wataniya Airways ceases flying

The Kuwait-based premium-service airline had been operating scheduled passenger services to Bahrain, Beirut, Cairo, Dubai, Istanbul, Sharm el Sheikh and Vienna with a fleet of 7 leased Airbus A320-214s. The aircraft were uniquely configured with 26 first class and 96 premium economy seats. ALAFCO and AerVenture each provided three aircraft on operating lease, and ILFC one. Wataniya Airways announced yesterday (16 March 2011) that it was it was ceasing operations with immediate effect, due to its poor financial situation and the recent unrest in the Middle East region. The carrier had been suffering losses for some time and in December 2010 announced plans to cut back its network, park three A320s and lay off staff. The airline now intends to enter into discussions with its shareholders to determine the future of the company.
