Airline Start Ups: Africa World plans low cost services in Ghana

Africa World Airlines is planning to launch low-cost domestic services, initially operating Embraer ERJ-145s on services linking Accra's Kotoka International Airport with Kumasi, Tamale and Takoradi. The airline, which is a joint venture between the Accra-based SAS Finance Group and Chinese investment and technical partners, was awarded its operating license on 4 March 2011. Africa World is also authorised for regional schedules and cargo operations. Plans to operate larger aircraft, probably Boeing 737-300s, are thought to have been deferred until 2012. The Ghanaian domestic market looks set to become much more competitive in the near future, with Lonrho Africa's pan-African airline group, Fly540, planning to launch low-cost operations from Accra this month (June 2011). and another start-up, Starbow Airlines (see blog) also expected to launch before the end of the year.
