The Barbados based start-up Caribbean low-cost carrier REDjet, which launched services in May 2011, has announced plans to acquire two more former American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82s. The announcement came together with an apology to customers for suffering 13 flight cancellations and 15 disruptions during August. The problems began when the carrier was unable to obtain permission in time to bring in additional aircraft on wet-lease as cover when one of its aircraft underwent scheduled maintenance. The airline was then briefly grounded when the one remaining MD-82 developed a hydraulic system fault. The airline has now concluded a lease deal to receive a third MD-82 in December 2011 and a fourth during the first quarter of 2012. REDjet also reports that it has entered into a wet-lease agreement with an unspecified US airline whereby it now has five aircraft on standby, whenever the carrier may need them.
