Airline Start-Ups: Singapore's LCC will be "scoot"

The Singapore Airlines Group announced the name of its new medium- and long-haul, low cost carrier on 1 November 2011. Scoot is expected to launch services to destinations including Australia and China in mid-2012. Long-haul services to Africa, Europe, India and the Middle East are expected to follow. The initial fleet will comprise four Boeing 777-200s transferred from the parent carrier, although Scoot's New Zealand-born chief executive, Campbell Wilson, has indicated that it will later acquire Boeing 777-200LRs and could eventually operate up to 40 aircraft. Scoot will offer a two class, no frills service at ticket prices up to 40% lower than legacy air fares. Passengers will be able to select from a list of seat, meal and baggage options and other extras, at additional cost, and also enjoy interlining capability with Singapore Airlines flights. Scoot will be operated and managed separately from Singapore Airlines, but the prospects for synergies between the two are promising. The Group could use the new LCC to develop new routes for Singapore Airlines or substitute for its sister company on routes less well suited to the SIA's full-service product offering.
