Airline Start-Ups: Mongolian Airlines to operate Fokker 50s

Mongolian Airlines is reported to have taken delivery, on lease from Nordic Aviation Capital A/S, on 10 November 2011 of a Fokker 50 (reg JU-8881, serial 20183 ). The question arising is which Mongolian carrier is going to operate the aircraft, which displays a previously unseen colour scheme unlike that of either the national flag carrier MIAT Mongolian Airlines, or that of existing Fokker 50 operator Aero Mongolia. A rebranding by Aero Mongolia seems most likely, but the third possibility is that Mongolian Airlines is a new start-up carrier. There is a new  website address at : http//:www.mongolian airlines.com, but it currently says nothing more than "coming soon".

Although all attempts to call and e-mail the new carrier have so far failed, it seems that it represents the long anticipated return to domestic services by flag carrier MIAT Mongolian Airlines. Having already cut back on domestic services in 1998, MIAT withdrew them completely in 2008, stating that it would relaunch services when more appropriate (turboprop) aircraft became available. It remains to be seen whether the new carrier will compete head to head or collaborate with privately-owned former MIAT subsidiary, Aero Mongolia.
