Fleet Plan News: ATI's first Boeing 767-300BDSF goes to work for DHL

Air Transport International (ATI) received its first Boeing 767-300BDSF aircraft (reg N316CM, serial 24146) in May 2011, following freighter conversion by IAI Bedek in Tel Aviv. The GE CF6-80C2B6 powered aircraft is the first of three former Qantas aircraft to be converted by IAI for fellow Air Transport Services Group company, Cargo Aircraft Management. It was redelivered in March 2011 and transferred to Little Rock based ATI. Since mid-August 2011, the aircraft has been regularly operating transatlantic services between New York JFK and Liege, on behalf of TNT Airways.

Fleet Plan News: Air Namibia adds first A319

The Namibian flag-carrier has acquired a CFM56-5B6/3 powered, former Air Berlin A319-100 (reg V5-ANL, serial 3346) on lease from Deucalion Capital. The aircraft will join two Boeing 737-500s and three Embraer ERJ-135s operating domestic and regional services from Windhoek. Air Namibia also operates two Airbus A340-300s on services to Luanda and a single long-haul route to Frankfurt.

Fleet Plan News: "Thai Wings" to operate A320s

Thai Airways International's planned low cost subsidiary, tentatively known as "Thai Wing" or "Thai Wings", is planning to launch domestic and short-haul regional services by the end of the second quarter of 2012. Originally expected to use Boeing 737s, the carrier will now operate only new build Airbus A320s. Operations will start with the first of six A320s leased by the parent carrier. One report gives RBS Aviation Capital as the supplying lessor and a 12-year lease term on these aircraft. The arrival of up to five additional A320s in 2014 and 2015, which will be purchased directly from the manufacturer by Thai Airways International, will complete the subsidiary's fleet. Although a low cost carrier, Thai Wings plans to configure all its aircraft with both business and economy class seating.

Fleet Plan News: CanaryFly receives first ATR42

Canaria Aeronautica, operating as CanaryFly, took delivery on 23 June 2011 of its first ATR42-320 (reg EC-LMX, serial 0115). The aircraft is on long-term lease from Irish carrier Air Contractors, an ASL Group company. CanaryFly will operate the aircraft on scheduled and charter flights from the Canary Islands to West African destinations including Agadir, Laayoune, Nouadhibou, Nouakchott and Villa Cineros. The airline had been operating a Merlin IVA aircraft since 2008 in both cargo and ambulance configurations, but had more recently been wet leasing ATR42s and ATR72s for its passenger charters and scheduled flights. Fleet Plan News: Israir to introduce ATR72-500s

The Israeli scheduled domestic, regional and charter carrier is shortly expected to take delivery its first ATR72-500 (reg 4X-ATH, serial 0931). The aircraft is the first of two ordered in February 2011. Both aircraft (the second is believed to be serial 0962) were originally ordered, but not taken up, by Syrianair. Both aircraft are expected to enter service before the end of 2011. Israir is currently the subject of takeover speculation after flag-carrier El Al Israel Airlines was reported to be in preliminary talks to acquire the carrier from owner, IDB Tourism. Israir could be a good fit for El Al, whose charter arm, Sun D'Or International Airlines was closed down by the Israeli Civil Aviation Authority on 1 April 2011. The deal could also improve IDB Tourism's financial position, as Israir's operating losses in the period 2007-2010 total over $87 million. One report valued Israir as $38 million at the end of 2010. Approval of any proposed deal by Israel's Antitrust Authority would be required, and could not be seen as automatic, given the small number of companies that make up Israel's airline sector.

Fleet Plan News: Mongolian orders first new build Boeings

In addition to the two used Boeing 767s being acquired from China Eastern Airlines, (see my blog of 3 June 2011), Mongolian Airlines is to purchase one new Boeing 767-300EREM and two Boeing 737-800s. The Mongolian president, Tsakhia Elbegdorj, signed the contract, valued at $245 million, while on his current visit to the USA.

Fleet Plan News: Aeroflot receives first Superjet

The Russian flag carrier became the second airline to take delivery of the Sukhoi Superjet in a formal handover on 6 June 2011 of its first SSJ 100-95LR (reg RA-89001, serial 95008). The PowerJet SaM146 powered aircraft, named "M. Vodopyanov", is scheduled to enter service on 16 June 2011, on an inaugural flight between Moscow and St.Petersburg. Regular services from Moscow to Nizhny Novgorod are expected to follow. Aeroflot has 30 Superjets on firm order, which are expected to be taken on financial leases, and options on 30 more. Aeroflot's delivery schedule calls for 10 Superjets to be delivered in this year, 12 in 2012 and eight in 2013.

Fleet Plan News: Mongolian takes first Boeing 767-300

The Ulaanbaatar-based national carrier, previously known as MIAT - Mongolian Airlines has adopted a revised livery with the arrival of the first 767, which drops "MIAT" from the name. The first of two former China Eastern, Rolls-Royce Trent 524H powered Boeing 767-300EREMs (reg JU-1011, serial 28149) was delivered during May 2011. One report suggests that the aircraft has retained China Eastern's seating configuration of 263 seats, with 18 in Business Class and 245 in Economy. Mongolian Airlines' schedules link Ulaanbaatar with Beijing, Berlin, Moscow, Seoul and Tokyo.

Fleet Plan News: TAAG Angola's first 777-300ER is imminent

The Angolan flag carrier's first Boeing 777-300ER (reg D2-TEG, serial 40805) flew for the first time on 19 May 2011, and is expected to be delivered in June 2011. The aircraft is the first of two on order from the manufacturer, with the second (reg D2-TEH, serial 40806) scheduled for delivery before the end of 2011. TAAG Angola operates an all Boeing fleet, comprising three 777-200ERs, two 747-300PCs and seven 737s, made up of four 737-700s and three 737-200s (one of which was converted to a freighter configuration in 2009).

The Siberian carrier received the former Arrow Air Boeing 757-200PF (reg VQ-BOX serial 24868) on lease from AWAS on 5 May 2011. Some reports suggest that the carrier is planning to acquire two more 757 freighters. Traditionally an operator of only Russian-built aircraft, Yakutia finally placed its first western-built aircraft, a wet-leased Boeing 757-200 passenger plane, into service between Moscow and Yakutsk in April 2007. Yakutia now operates five leased passenger 757s and three leased Next Generation 737s alongside a still sizeable fleet of Soviet era jets and turboprops.

The Kazakh flag carrier took delivery of its first Embraer ERJ-190-100LR (reg P4-KCC, serial 19000418) on 26 April 2011. The aircraft, the first of two being supplied on lease by Jetscape, will be used to introduce new services from Almaty to Samara and Tbilisi.

Fleet Plan News: Armavia takes delivery of first Superjet

The Armenian flag carrier took delivery earlier today (19 April 2011) of the first of two Sukhoi SSJ-100 Superjets (reg EK-95015, serial 95007). The aircraft is the first production example. The delivery comes seven days later than planned, although the Superjet programme has suffered rather more protracted delays during the certification process. Armavia plans to introduce the type into service later this week, between Yerevan and Moscow, and should receive the second aircraft next month. Aeroflot, the second customer, plans to introduce the SSJ into service between Moscow and Nizhny Novgorod in early June 2011, delayed from 15 May 2011. The Russian flag carrier has firm orders for 30 Superjets, many if not all of which are to be acquired via financial leases, plus options on 30 more. Further orders have been received from Kartika Airlines of Indonesia (30 firm), Interjet of Mexico (15 firm + 5 options), Orient Thai (12 firm + 12 options) and Phongsavanh Airlines of Laos (3 firm + 6 options). Russian carrier Gazpromavia also signed a memorandum of intent for 10 Superjets at last year's Farnborough Air Show, although no firm order has been announced. Additional orders from domestic lessors came from Financial Leasing Company (10 firm including 2 for Yakutia Airlines) and Avialeasing PIFK (24 firm for operation by UTair Aviation + 16 options ). Orders from foreign lessors include 30 firm +15 options for Pearl Aircraft Corporation of Bermuda, 6 firm + 4 options for U.S. lessor Willis Lease Finance and 5 firm for AMA Asset Management Advisors of Switzerland. Orders lost with the demise of the carriers that made them, include 10 firm + 10 options for ItAli Airlines and 6 firm + 4 options for Dalavia. Hungarian flag carrier Malev also ordered 15 firm + 15 options, but subsequently changed hands, giving rise to doubts that the order will be fulfilled.

Fleet Plan News: Avianca Brazil acquires A318s

The Brazilian arm of Avianca, formerly known as OceanAir, is taking five former LAN Airlines Airbus A318-121 aircraft, as it starts to replace its fleet of 14 Fokker 100s. The first of the Pratt & Whitney PW6122A-powered aircraft (reg PR-AVH, serial 3001) is expected to enter service in April 2011 and to be followed by PR-AVJ / 3030 in May 2011, PR-AVK / 3062 in June 2011, and both PR-AVL / 3214 and PR-AVO / 3216, in August 2011. LAN conducted a strategic fleet renewal last year, which earmarked all 15 of its A318s (including 3 operated by LAN Ecuador) for disposal by the end of 2013. Avianca Brazil would seem to be a very likely recipient of some if not all of the remaining aircraft. The A318 is the least successful Airbus model, with only 70 extant examples worldwide. Of these, just 44 are in airline service with five operators, while another 11 are currently parked and the balance are A318 Elites, flown by corporate or military users.

Fleet Plan News: Oman Air takes first E-jet

The Muscat-based carrier took delivery yesterday (23 March 2011) of the first of five on order Embraer 175s (reg A40-EA, serial 17000323). The delivery schedule calls for the four remaining E-175s (model ERJ-170-200 LR) to be delivered in May 2011 (A4O-EB/ 17000324), August 2011, August 2012 and March 2013. The airline also holds purchase rights on another five E-175s. One aircraft is expected to be operated for the Oman Police force. Oman Air's E-175s are configured as dual-class 71 seaters, with 11 in business class and 60 in economy. The GE CF34-8E5 powered aircraft will allow the carrier to expand its regional network with more point-to-point routes not previously sustainable with larger jets.

Fleet Plan News: Sky Wings expands with first A320s and RJ100s

The Greek charter and wet-leasing specialist, which currently operates three McDonnell Douglas MD-83s and a single MD-82, is in the process of acquiring two Airbus A320s and purchasing Aegean Airlines' fleet of four BAe RJ100s (serials E3341, E3343, E3358 and E3362). The RJ100's are expected to be re-registered, in line with serial E3358, the former SX-DVC, which recently became SX-DMC. The airline is also leasing two IAE V2500-A1 powered Airbus A320-231s (serial 376 from AerCap, and serial 405 from Jetscape), both of which were ferried to Istanbul earlier this month, prior to delivery.

Fleet Plan News: Danube Wings to introduce jet service, again, with 737-300

The Bratislava-based scheduled regional, charter and wet-leasing airline, plans to introduce jet service for a second time on 1 April 2011 when a 149-seat Boeing 737-300 (reg OM-VRD, serial 28333) enters service. The new aircraft, which has been leased from Aircraft Finance Trust, will primarily be used to serve holiday destinations in the Greek Islands, Turkey and North Africa. The carrier, which from launch had operated only ATR72 turboprops, briefly wet-leased a Boeing 737-400 (OK-WGY, serial 25839) from CSA Czech Airlines between December 2009 and February 2010.

The company, a Qantas subsidiary, received its first Boeing 767-381ERF (reg VH-EFR, serial 33510), purchased by Qantas from ANA Cargo, in Sydney on 12 February 2011. The aircraft became the first to display dedicated "Qantas Freight" markings. While Qantas is a major cargo carrier, most of its freight capacity is carried either in the belly holds of the Qantas mainline passenger fleet or using wet-leased Boeing 767 and 747 freighters. This aircraft will replace a smaller Boeing 767-200(F), which has been operated on wet-lease from US carrier Air Transport International (ATI) on Trans-Tasman routes to New Zealand. Express Freighters Australia was established in October 2006 to operate four Qantas-owned former passenger Boeing 737-300s which were converted into freighters and wet-leased to Australian air Express, a joint venture carrier formed by Qantas with Australia Post.

Fleet Plan News: TACA Peru introduces the E-190

The Avianca-TACA Group carrier placed the aircraft, an E-190-100AR (reg N988TA, serial 19000399) into service on 15 February 2011, on new domestic routes linking Lima with Tarapoto and Trujillo. TACA International, the El Salvador-based sister carrier already operates six E-190s from an order for twelve placed in September 2007, with four more operated by the Group's Costa Rican arm, LACSA and one aircraft on backlog for delivery in 2012. Prior to what is a major expansion of domestic services, TACA Peru operated only one domestic route, between Lima and Cuzco. A third new domestic route, from Lima to Lake Titicaca, was also launched on 15 February 2011, flown by the carrier's single Airbus A320. Created in 1999 as TransAm by Daniel Rattii and Ernesto Mahle, the airline adopted its current identity in 1999 after Grupo TACA acquired Mahle's 49 per cent shareholding. TACA Peru previously focussed primarily on operating international services from LIma to destinations throughout South and Central America and to Mexico City and Miami, using three A319s as its mainstay.

Fleet Plan News: AeroGal receives first Airbus A319s

The Ecuadorian carrier which derives its name from the Galapagos lslands that its serves, received the first of five Airbus A319-112s (reg HC-CKL / serial 1866) on 21 January 2010. All five have been leased from ILFC and were formerly operated by Mexicana. Delivery of the second (HC-CKM / 1872) is thought to be imminent. Traditionally a Boeing 737 operator, AeroGal became part of Avianca-TACA Ltd when the Group exercised its option to acquire 80 per cent of the carrier in March last year. Even before the option had been exercised, AeroGal had sourced two aircraft from other Group carriers, with a Boeing 767-300EREM (November 2009) and a Boeing 757-200 (February 2010) arriving on lease from former operator Oceanair. Three late-model Airbus A320-214s now also operated by AeroGal on lease were previously with Avianca but were transferred to Ecuador via sale and lease back deals in the second half of 2010.

Fleet Plan News: ABX Air receives first Boeing 767-300BDSF

The aircraft (reg N219CY, serial 24358) which is leased from Guggenheim Aviation Partners and will operate for DHL, was redelivered from Tel Aviv to Cincinnati on 27 October 2010, after conversion by IAI Bedek. Wilmington-based ABX Air is one of three cargo carriers, along with Orlando-based Capital Cargo International International Airlines and Toledo-based Air Transport International (ATI) making up the airline contingent of the diversified Air Transport Services Group (ATSG).
