Stansted Airport Terminal Extension
Building work on the terminal extension at Stansted Airport is on schedule for full completion by December 2008 and partial opening by June 2008 while the controversy over plans for building a second runway at Stansted contiune. The extension infrastructure building work was nearing completion at the end of November 2007. This has included lifting 22 roof domes that form the new envelope structure into position. These are now being glazed and weatherproofed. Each roof dome measuring 18 metres and weighing 30 tons had to be lifted into position by a special gib crane.The £40 million extension project will create an extra 5,900m of floor space to the international arrivals area with expanded immigration, baggage and customs halls.Photo taken at the end of November shows the new extension work with the new roof diagrids(roof domes)in position at the end of the terminal matching the existing terminal roof structure and appearance.
