Already commonplace in military aviation, the benefits of loading fuel much nearer to the destination centre on significantly reducing the fuel carried for later stages of the journey. Flight re-fuelling of airliners could however become routine, saving some of the fuel used to lift massive fuel loads from the ground and carry it halfway around the world.
