Solar energy is attractive, the sun’s energy is free and in the upper altitudes is easily available. The challenges are also great. The sun does not shine at all times and some kind of interface between the sun and the engine is usually necessary, most commonly as a battery. Also, the current efficiency of power conversion to power incident is low, somewhere around 20% with a theoretical maximum believed to be around the mid-30% level.

Most airports do not separate the leisure and business traveller. Both groups have to be submitted to lengthy security procedures. Passengers could be offered the possibility to use modern ID technologies for guidance and tracking through the terminal with checks made through a simple full-body scan corridor.

Airfield power devices assist take-off and landing allowing aircraft to use less installed power and less energy. One idea would be to hoist aircraft onto ramp, allowing them to exchange potential energy for kinetic energy. Alternatively a maglev propulsive rail could allow the aircraft to take-off from virtually a flat surface.

Cruiser / Feeder concept

The concept envisages very large - possibly nuclear-powered - aircraft flying on stable circuitous routes that connect major centres of population. These large cruisers remain airborne for very long periods so that they could be considered to be permanently cycling around their designated route.

They would fly at an economical altitude and speed which would not vary substantially.Linking these cruisers to fixed bases near the population centres would be short range shuttle aircraft designed only to travel from the ground to the an interception with the cruiser and back again.

Multi-moduality could be enhanced if the same type of containers could be used in all types of transport modes. New aircraft configurations like the blended wing body aircraft would allow the use of rectangular containers that could be used by other transport means as well without the need to repack.
