Traditionally, passengers and cargo are collected at terminal buildings; runways connect these via (often long) taxi-ways; passengers are transferred to the aircraft via terminal gates; some by buses while luggage is transported via a centralised handling location – all requiring substantial land use. An alternative could be to locate landside activities as close to the runway as possible and preferably underground.
