Rockwell Sabre 65, HB-VCN piloted by Riccardo Mortara arrived in Shannon on March 21 as part of the Italian's bid to break the world class record held by the late Steve Fossett for circumnavigation of the globe. The aircraft departedGeneva on March 19. Shannon was not included on the original route. On Saturday March 20, whilst half way between Montreal and Keflavik the crew was informed that all airports in Iceland were closed due to volcanic activity, necessitating a return to Goose Bay. Arriving in Shannon at 09:20 on Sunday March 21 the aircraft departed for Marrakesh at 09:48.
