The characteristic nose of Consolidated PBY-5A Catalina c/n 300 PH-PBY, painted to resemble a Catalina of the former Ducth Naval Air Service (in Dutch: Marine Luchtvaart Dienst or MLD) with pseudo registration 16-218 at the former Soesterberg air base in The Netherlands on 17 September 2008. The aircraft is named after the last Dutch sea-hero, rear admiral and former navy pilot Karel Doorman who commanded the Allied Combined Striking Force against the Japanese navy in the Battle of the Java Sea on 27 and 28 February 1942. Karel Doorman perished in the Battle.
