Cockpit of NATO AWACS Boeing E-3A Sentry c/n 22855 LX-N 90442 at NATO Air Base (NAB) Geilenkirchen in Germany on 27 May 2011. The E-3A has good old fashioned analog avionics and a 1950s flight crew composition, with two pilots, a navigator and a flight engineer, whose station is visible on the right. Because of the sudden increase in the number of operations, the component now even has to hire new staff, including flight crew. This poses somewhat of a problem with new pilots, as todays flight crew are trained in glass cockpits and not used to the E-3As instruments and flight modes (or the lack of them). Additional training is therefore required.
