The development of the TBM 850 can be trraced back to the Mooney 301. After Mooney was purchased by the French company SOCATA a turboprop version of the 301 became the TBM 700 (TB stands for Tarbes, the French city where the SOCATA head office is located, and the M stands for Mooney). In 2009 the French industrial comglomerate DAHER acquired a majority stake in SOCATA., Since then the company is known as DAHER-SOCATA.
